The Fund’s team of 17 runners took to the streets to take part in the annual British 10K London and raise money for their in-house charity.
Led by Fund President Sir Gus O’Donnell, they all managed to complete the 6.2 mile course on a warm and sunny day in the capital, and early indications suggest they’ll raise well over £5,000 for us.
Sir Gus, who once again completed the run in a time faster than his age, came up with an exciting way to get people to part with their sponsorship for us this year. He’s pledged to personally match every donation made to his JustGiving page, which will double the eventual total.
So far, with the figure standing at just over £1,200, it means he will be making an additional four figure donation to the Fund!
William Hague is a regular Fund runner and used this year’s race to attack his Personal Best for the 10k distance. His aim was to break the 40 minute barrier for the first time – which he did in some style, running 37.48 minutes, and finishing in a staggering 62nd place out of nearly 25,000 runners!
Members of CSSC Sports and Leisure also teamed up this year to run for the Fund, in recognition of our 125th anniversary appeal. David Hayday, Karen Barnes, Toby Woodford, Tom Thompsett, and Phil Wright have been eagerly fundraising for the last couple of months, and raised over £1,000.
And Frank Thomas-Hockey completed the run for the second time, and has a very personal reason for raising money for the Fund: “I was diagnosed with bipolar in 1996. It's a lot better since I married my wonderful wife Laura but I did have a really bad patch of depression early on, during which I was no longer entitled to sick pay.
“Thankfully the Civil Service Benevolent Fund was there to help me. I started fundraising a little late this year due to my easily distracted nature. Might be a bit ambitious, but I'm sure you guys will back me!”
