Amy Rees, Governing Governor - Leadership Award

Amy Rees

Amy Rees, Governing Governor
HMP Brixton

Amy Rees was appointed deputy governor of HMP Brixton on 23 March 2008. At the time Brixton was a struggling prison with high staff sick levels, a drugs problem and had experienced a number of selfinflicted
deaths.

On 23 July 2009 she was appointed governor. Under her leadership, Brixton has made huge strides and is now a better prison for prisoners and one where staff want to come to work. This can be evidenced by the
significant reduction in staff sickness an turnover, a drug test failure rate which has fallen from a peak month of 50 per cent to 13.5 per cent in May, and there has been no self-inflicted death for over two years.
The prison is cleaner and more settled, with very low use of segregation. Amy has made savings and yet improved the regime.
