2050 Pathways Analysis team
Department of Energy and Climate Change
The 2050 Pathway project developed the government’s first comprehensive analysis of the practical changes
required to deliver the UK’s 80 per cent greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.
Drawing on expertise from secondees from National Grid, UKERC, AECOM and EdF, analysts from other departments, a panel of the chief scientific advisers and over 500 external experts, a small team of DECC officials developed a completely new way of approaching this problem. They built an analytical tool – the ‘2050 Calculator’ – that robustly captures all of the major choices and complexity of the energy and emissions system, in a way that allowed policy leads and other users to explore the impacts choices in different sectors can have on the UK’s emissions. The Calculator, and a report explaining the approach and implications, was published online as a Call for Evidence alongside the Annual Energy Statement. While the Call for Evidence runs, the team is focusing on using the work internally – to ensure policies across government will deliver the UK’s legal targets – and externally, taking the work to a wider public audience to explain the choices the UK faces. This includes developing a ‘serious game’ to reach as many people as possible.
