The Office of National Statistics has said that employment in the NHS increased by 66,000 in the first quarter of this year, up 4.2 percent compared with the first quarter of 2009.
This put the total employment figure in the NHS at 1.626m, or 27 percent of total public sector employment.
For the first time, the ONS – which yesterday has released figures across the public sector by industry – has broken its figures down to show employment by region. For the NHS, it shows that employment grew in all parts of the UK but this increase was far bigger in the East and West Midlands than in Scotland and the North East.
