Dozens of civil servants from across the country have been featured in the New Year’s honours list.
The gongs went to staff at every level and grade, from permanent secretaries to administrative assistants.
Nigel Hamilton, head of the civil service in Northern Ireland, and Bill Jeffrey, the most senior civilian official within the Ministry of Defence, were both awarded a Knights Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB).
Dr Deborah Reynolds, who stepped down as chief veterinary officer having overseen the handling of both this year’s foot and mouth and bluetongue outbreaks, received a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB).
Bruce Mann, the former head of the civil contingencies unit within the Cabinet Office, and Anthony Inglese, chief solicitor for the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), both received the same award.
Alan Garwood, the former head of Defence Exports Services, which is to become part of UK Trade and Investment in April, was one of the many public officials made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
Also on the list was Richard Summersgill, director of child benefit and tax credit offices for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and a former special adviser to the prime minister’s office, Elizabeth Lloyd.
Lloyd was one of a number of Tony Blair’s staff in the New Year’s honours – former official spokesman Samuel Kelly will become a CB, while junior officials Susan Geddes and Wendy Abbs were made members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
