Conservative Europe spokesman Mark Francois has reiterated his party’s insistence that there should be referendum on the new EU treaty, dismissing the government’s much-hyped red line points as “red herrings”.
He said: “There are important powers even outside of the red lines themselves, like a permanent president for the EU who could claim to speak in our name, a right for the EU to sign treaties, again in our name. Thos powers aren’t even covered by the red lines.”
Pressed for comment on former Conservative chancellor Kenneth Clarke’s depiction of party Europe policy as “absurd”, he said: “Ken is Ken”.
