Leadership Award - Lori Chilton, Interventions & Substance Misuse Group, MOJ

Lori Chilton - winner of the Leadership Award sponsored by Pinsent Masons and the Cabinet Secretary Awards, sponsored by Civil Service Commissioners

We are Lori Chilton’s senior management team. We have worked for years within criminal justice and government and have seen many different leaders, policies and governments. We think Lori is exceptional. Lori always delivers, but never at the cost of those around her. She is a trailblazer, an innovator but never takes her eye off the ball.

She can see the big picture but also cope with the detail at the same time. She has managed huge, complex pieces of work requiring significant cultural, structural and organisational change.

Lori revolutionised the delivery of drug treatment programmes across the prison service, increasing delivery by 100 per cent, bringing in quality assurance, and setting up new partnership working. She drove up efficiencies and improved financial systems and contracting.

She did this with professionalism and integrity, making systems better value for money, more sustainable, fair and transparent. Her decisions were based on facts and the needs of the organisation.

Last year Lori successfully managed the merger of five HQ groups. She led the merger with great vision and clarity whilst showing a willingness to listen to people.

This year Lori went through the re-emergence of cancer, with great dignity and strength. She continued to engage in work, with the same drive and pace. She cared about how the team were coping and thought about the impact on us.

If you looked at what she achieved during this time you would never know. We are proud of Lori, what she enables us to do and what we can achieve together in the future. In our organisation we talk a lot about effective leadership; Lori lives and breathes it.
