NAO praises online tax work

The National Audit Office has praised HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) programme to expand online tax filing, but said that the department does not have sufficient information to assess whether it has achieved value for money.

HMRC has spent £341m on the programme since 2007, and expects to break even by April 2013.

An NAO report published last week said take-up rates for online services were “good and increasing” and this work “represents a real achievement”. However, it noted that HMRC does not have “sufficient understanding of the relative costs it incurs in online filing compared to filing of paper returns or of the cost and benefits to customers”.
