A government consultation on better regulation, to be published this autumn, will call for more self-regulation by companies, business minister Mark Prisk said yesterday.

Speaking at the Local and National Regulators Conference, organised by CSW publisher Dods, Prisk said: “We want to see much greater use of co-regulation, where business shares with government the regulatory responsibilities. We’d like to substantially broaden the opportunities for businesses and others in designed regulatory systems to deliver effective compliance”.

He called for more “earned recognition in regulatory regimes, where regulators properly recognise business activities that are supporting compliance. This will remove unnecessary duplication between public and private schemes, [and give] industry a greater incentive to lead on delivering good compliance.”

There are opportunities here for local enterprise partnerships, he said.
