The Environment Agency may have to increase spending on flood protection due to budgetary pressures on local authorities, the National Audit Office (NAO) said this week.
The NAO warned that while local authorities have been given more responsibility for flood defences, they may struggle to raise the additional £20m required each year between 2011 and 2035 to maintain the current level of defences.
Last week the NAO also criticised the Research Councils for going £51m over budget on their shared services project. “This is yet another example of a project embarked upon without the necessary planning,” said Amyas Morse, head of the NAO. The project was due for completion in December 2009, but wasn’t finished until March 2011.
