Who can take part in the competition?

Any UK civil servant can enter, whether you're from Wigan or Whitehall we want you for the Challenge.

Do you apply as an individual or a team?

We’re accepting applications from individuals firstly. The Civil Service and the production team will be putting the teams of four together to take part in the challenge.

Why would I want to take part?

You’re an ambitious, exceptional individual who wants to show what the best of the Civil Service can do to transform the UK. The winners will take part in a live final at Civil Service Live 2010 with a chance to meet Sir Gus O’Donnell.

What’s the challenge?

The brief is a current, real challenge - but we can’t tell you what it is quite yet! As it’s non-political, it will be possible to get involved during and after an election if it is called.

When does it take place?

You’ll need to put three sets of dates in your diary. The Challenge will be set on Saturday 22nd May, and then you must be free to film on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th May (Please remember this is a bank holiday weekend, although we won’t be filming on Monday 31st May!). You will also need to attend Civil Service Live 2010 on Thursday 8th July. You will not be able to claim this weekend working as overtime.

Where does filming take place?

Teams will be based around the country which might mean you will have to travel on the evening of Friday 28th May.

Do I need to tell my line manager?

Yes. You will need the written endorsement of your line manager who will also have to agree to giving you time away from your normal duties.

Are there any costs involved?

Your travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by us.

How will participants be selected for the event?

A shortlist of candidates will be drawn up to be interviewed by telephone. The Cabinet Office and production crew will then build teams based on skills, personality and attitudinal criteria.

What is the tone of this event?

The Civil Service Challenge is designed to showcase best practice, celebrate success and change perceptions across the Civil Service. The result will be a entertaining and credible “come-together” moment for the Civil Service.

Who’s behind the Civil Service Challenge?

The Challenge is being run by Civil Service World, the organisers of Civil Service Live 2010 on behalf of Sir Gus O’Donnell.

Will I appear on TV?

No. But the film will be distributed in copies of Civil Service World, shown at Civil Service Live 2010 and published on the Civil Service Live website.
